❤️🔥🔥Heroic Word - 9/12🔥❤️🔥
Our reflection on the upcoming Sunday’s Gospel yielded some powerful nuggets. Here are a few of mine:
When Peter acknowledged that Jesus was the Christ, he almost immediately fell to temptation so significant that Jesus said to him, “Get behind me Satan.” Just because we are fervent in our acknowledgement of the Lord, doesn’t mean our intentions are pure in calling him “Lord” or Christ”
When Satan tempted Jesus in the wilderness, he tempted him with wealth and influence, and Jesus resisted him. When Peter rebuked Jesus, he was tempting him towards a competing understanding of the Messiah/Christ as a military leader with a different kind of power/influence. Interesting how at the moment of greatest sacrifice, the temptation to pass it up for power/influence/status stands close by. Does any of you relate?
Peter and disciples had a particular understanding of Christ/Messiah that was in direct conflict with the true call of the Messiah. They had a military leader in mind. Jesus’s call as messiah was woven through and through with the heart of God to save his people from their sin, and Jesus’s sacrifice was necessary for that. We are called to similarly live lives of charity motivated by the same charity as our Lord.
What are some of yours?
