What are your roles?

I wanted to share something a friend recounted to me this morning. He was doing an activity for a diocesan group, and the bishop showed up unexpectedly. The activity was to write on a notecard the various roles and titles you carry. Circle the one or two that are the most important or meaningful and then share with the group. I certainly would have filled the notecard with about half a dozen different things.

Bishop shared first. His notecard only had 2 words: Father, and Son. First of all, wow. Talk about narrowing it down to what matters most. But then, about these two words, he simply said, “The quality of my fatherhood is dependent on the quality of my sonship.”

Whew. What a timely reminder in Advent as we prepare for Christ’s coming. Christ is our example of perfect reception and obedience to the Father. That is what fueled him, and it’s what fuels us. Come Lord Jesus!
